RENA'S STORY

Rena lives in Fort Greene with her family, where they've set deep roots into the community. She is a member of Friends of Fort Greene Park and serves on the Community Affairs Committee for Kingsview Homes. Growing up in a family of immigrant parents, Rena defied expectations to follow her passion for government and the law, becoming the first lawyer in her family. Rena is now running to become the first South Asian woman to serve on Brooklyn's Civil Court.

Rena believes that all people should be respected and she is best suited to give litigants the fair and equal day in court that all Brooklynites deserve in the New York City Civil Court, which has long justly been termed “the people’s court.” To Rena, a judge’s role is to ensure that everyone before them is heard and treated equally by our justice system, especially vulnerable individuals and communities.
Rena has served in the state court system for a decade years as a law clerk and court attorney in the Civil Court, Supreme Court, and Appellate Division. Prior to that, she worked in private practice and clerked with a federal judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals. She has proven herself to be an effective public servant, dedicated to reducing backlogs, getting results, and helping people move on with their lives.

Diversity is more than color, gender, orientation, or socio-economic status... It’s about acknowledging our differences and acknowledging adversity and challenges that others might have faced. It is to have empathy for the plight of others who are not like you or who might not have had the same experiences as you. For Rena, this concept of diversity translates into respect for litigants and proper temperament. She firmly believes that judges should possess honesty and integrity – these are personal attributes that she posseses, which extend to everything Rena says, does, and writes.
